		<abstract>The lack of information about the environments found in the flood plains of Amazon part in Maranhão motivated this study, which goal was to carry out a diagnosis of the physical environment through the characterization of the geodiversity of that area, with the help of tools available remote sensing. The study area was Pinheiro town, MA and the characterization of the physical environment was carried out from the cartographic representation of geodiversity in a Geographic Information System, that used pre-existing thematic data acquired on a national basis belonging to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) and the Project Shutle Radar Topography Misson (SRTM). Four geological and environmental units were identified, proving to be a great geodiversity area where the environment of recent alluvial plains is the most relevant in the context of wetlands, once this region is one of eleven Sítios Ramsar of the country - Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. Products obtained in the present study on geodiversity include geology and geomorphology maps, geomorphology, soils, terrain and elevation, which are important tools to support research about the biotic and abiotic environment, as well as the understanding of the physical environment behavior, in view of the human occupation in the region, and environmental planning and management of it.</abstract>
